NEWS · 19 September 2026

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA-G) has asked NEPRA to let distribution companies charge an extra Rs 1.7267 per unit in October bills as the fuel charges adjustment for August 2026. NEPRA will hear the petition on 29 September 2026 at NEPRA Tower, Islamabad, and online.

UPDATE · 2 October 2026: NEPRA held the hearing on 29 September and reserved its decision. It said it would issue a detailed ruling after reviewing the data presented, so the final rate has not been announced. The Nation reports the request would add about Rs 29.5 billion to October bills.

What happened

Each month, the fuel cost built into the tariff is compared with what fuel actually cost. For August 2026, consumers were charged a reference fuel cost of Rs 7.0998 per unit, but the actual cost came to Rs 8.8265 per unit, according to the petition. The difference, Rs 1.7267 per unit, is what the CPPA-G wants recovered in October bills.

The Nation reported that the cost of power generation in August rose by 37.63% year on year, led by a 111% rise in the cost of RLNG-based power, a 43.3% rise in nuclear power cost and a 21.4% rise in imported coal.

What it means for you

As of 2 October 2026 this is still a request, not a decision: NEPRA reserved its ruling after the 29 September hearing. NEPRA sets the final rate, and which consumer categories it covers, after the hearing. If it is approved close to the requested level, it will come on top of the Rs 2.58 per unit added to September bills.

Fuel adjustments only apply to units you buy from the grid. Units your own solar system produces and you use directly carry no fuel charge at all, which is why self-consumption matters more each time these adjustments rise. Our guide to IPPs and capacity payments explains the rest of the tariff.

Buy fewer units from the grid. Solar Net Metering designs solar systems for your own use and handles net billing across Pakistan: 10 kW net billing costs Rs 160,000 with LESCO and K-Electric, and Rs 200,000 with the other distribution companies.
